From 9 September 2024, there will no longer be a doctor's fee in England and Wales when arranging a funeral. This is because from this date, all deaths in England and Wales will be independently viewed, either by a relevant coroner or by a Medical Examiner and the cost will be met by the NHS.
A Medical Examiner is a specifically trained independent senior doctor who will scrutinise all deaths across a local area that do not fall under the coroner's jurisdiction. By providing a greater level of scrutiny over the cause of deaths; it is hoped that the introduction of Medical Examiners will make it less likely that unnatural causes of death will go unnoticed; that the number of deaths unnecessarily referred to the coroner will be reduced and that national data about causes of death will be captured with greater accuracy.
Medical Examiners, or Medical Examiner Officers, will also be available to meet with families, or their representatives, if they wish to discuss the cause of death.
Everyone at Ginns and Gutteridge ensured that the service we received was compassionate and respectful from start to finish. When arranging the funeral the director went that extra mile to speak to the coroner on our behalf. On the day of the funeral, all the directors were informative, making sure we all knew what was going to happen when. They supported family members who were being pall bearers with a calm & patient attitude, ensuring everyone felt comfortable. There was always a sense that they looking out for you. One got down to my 5 year old grandson's level checking he was OK... and asking him if he wanted a job as they were dressed the same! When I went to collect my Dad's ashes, the director was warm & welcoming but also concerned for my wellbeing. As for the cost of it, we as a family respected our Dad's wishes for a simple funeral, nevertheless we all felt we received personal and thorough attention at all times. One point to make though are there are added costs for the minister, cremation and doctor which were not in our original quote.
Thank you for your review and your kind comments. We are so pleased to know that you were satisfied with the service we provided. Our price lists show our fees only and disbursements such as cremation fees etc are extra - I do apologise if this was not explained at the time.
